We live in a digital era. No longer is news and information controlled by large publishing houses, powerful corporations, or authoritative governments. Through the development of social media, the individual is plugged-in and crowds empowered. This disruptive transformation has allowed the balance of control to shift into the hands of global citizens.
Interest groups on the Internet have evolved into organized interests. Hundreds of millions of people are being engaged into social networks. Once enough citizens are mobilized and decide to participate, their networks build commanding social capital leading to the political power to influence not only the Fortune 500, but governments around the world.
Web 2.0 is the innovative technology disrupting the social order and commercial status quo; and if the Law of Disruption holds true then the prime victims will be today’s industrial and political leaders.
The good news is that this outcome is only guaranteed by inaction instead of adapting to the changed conditions. In fact, these social networks can be influenced, just as powerfully as they can incite.
During these tough economic times, the world is relying on governments to lead. We want you to lead. Corporations are already reengineering their Executive teams to engage these citizen lobbyists. It´s now time for Government 2.0 as well.
